    Re: Freedom Train

If more people showed responsibility for the animals they have, spay/neuter, vaccinate. If breeders werent dumping dogs they cant show, if people were more conscious of what is happening we can only -hope- it wakes them up to the reality. We cannot save all of them. Thats a fact. I dont know how many animals i have taken in that were over 10 years old and abandoned by their families because they were old. How many that were dumped at our gate because they werent cute puppies anymore. But if people were required to spay/neuter their pets that would reduce the numbers of unwanted dogs ending up in the gas chamber. Absolutely.

Bob, I could not say it better myself.  I have had the pleasure of working with some of the people involved in this forum.  I have seen the hard decisions they have to make - it takes a huge heart and strong will to run one of these groups.  Like the animals they save they give unconditional love.

Its really amazing to transport animals from hopeless situations. Travelling with them you really get to see them blossom as the fear slowly fades from their eyes.

Rhonda wasnt able to post this as it seems to always cut off whatever she tries to post so im sending this for her.

Last weekend I was given the opportunity to experience something truly wonderful. I was able to ride my own transport up to NJ along with the furkids, and meet some of the greatest people along the way. People who continually give of themselves in order to save the lives of so many innocent animals. These people don't do it for money or attention or any type of kudos. They do it because they truly care about the fate of these precious creatures who are much more forgiving, trusting, and unconditional than I think any of us are capable of being. These same people donate their time, gas, vehicles, and hearts to get these animals to safety, and often overlook many inconveniences such as weather conditions and schedules that fall behind, and they volunteer time after time.

When I arrived at the rescue, I met another group of angels, volunteers who work in the rescue to provide love, care, and anything else that each individual animal may need. They work together to provide a haven until that perfect forever family comes along. As another great lady said, "you could feel the love surrounding the place." Far from the fear of the shelter, pain of the abuser, or loneliness of the chain that was their previous existence, they are finally able to live each day rather than suffering through it.

I just wanted to tell all of these people how truly honored that I am to know you. You could just sit and complain about the situation, but you don't. You DO something, whether it be with me or with some of the other truly awesome transport coordinators and rescues. You take the time, make the effort, to create the miracles for these helpless animals who are alive because of you. Thank you for the early morning pickups and late arrivals. For going the extra way when another cannot. Thank you for hugging these furkids, as your hug may have been the first they had ever gotten. For the kind words and treats. The gentle hand. Thank you. I appreciate you more than I could ever say.

    Doc_Furious.:
I mean saving animals is great and a good boost for the old ego or karma or whatever but I bet there's more homeless people on the streets tonight freezing their cajones off than there are unloved friggen iguanas on death row!

Tell me, how many homeless people have you personally picked up off of the street, taken to your home, bathed and provided medical attention, paid for medical treatment then found them a job, education, and a home in which to live for the rest of their life?

    I would say probably 0

So then, how can you disregard the personal sacrifice many of us make (which is nothing by the way) of time, energy, and emotion to receive an unwanted animal from a shelter, provide medical treatment and find a home and family for that animal to spend the rest of its life with.

When you've personally taken in 10 homeless persons and rehabilitated them, then I will listen to what  you have to say. Until then, shut up.

many times I get comments like yours Doc about helping the homeless first when people hear I rescue animals.  I have spent much time, effort and money helping homeless people.  I know many rescuers who also help people.  I don't think a person should be labeled or lashed out against because they are helping animals, even if they are not helping people.  I think what is important is that every person on this planet does something, anything to help make things better for life around them in general.  The ones to be questioned are the ones that do nothing and there are alot of them.  They read the news, the drive by those in need (human and animal alike) and they do nothing.  They don't give of their time, effort or finances and walk blindly through life helping no one but themself.  Maybe that is who you should be targeting.

    EXACTLY Tina!

We're all on the same side, working together to help those less fortunate than ourselves.   It also seems like those whom we need to target aren't going to be browsing such bulletin boards anyway.  We need to go out and show these people by example.  Some folks may never care and some may have a change of heart down the road, but some just don't know, and those are the ones most likely to make a difference once they're given positive guidance.

I will always enjoy helping animals directly, and I feel that getting a pet into a new home IS helping the people as well.  Pets are GOOD for us, they lower our blood pressure, they teach us responsibility, they are even used in therapy for visiting seniors and sick children.

Keep up the awesome work rescuers!! You are an inspiration to many and a hero to the lives you save!! Sometimes people start to put value judgements on which lives are more important animals or people. I find it ridiculous we are all here to share the earth and live together. So every life is important and should be treated as such. In some countries human lives aren't valued because they are of a different religion, race,or tribe. Empathy is where is starts be it animal, people or our environment. Taking action is the result of having empathy and not being lazy or afraid. Thank you for all the work you do!! Stacey

Hi, I'm Amy -- one of the volunteers at Room For One More. I'm a first grade teacher most of the time and whatever energy I have left I try to contribute to these homeless doggies and kitties that come thru our doors for a second chance. One thing about being involved with animal rescue is that you see the results of the worst of our society -- the truly horrible things that people do to animals are really unthinkable, but these horrors happen every single day. It can be very depressing to know that our fellow human beings are capable of causing such suffering and pain to other living creatures. On the flip side of that, however, are all the people like Rhonda and the others on the Freedom Train, plus all the volunteers who go above and beyond to help these animals once they're safe at our shelter facility. The sheer goodness and love that I have witnessed, to know what GOOD humans are capable of, to see how big people's hearts can really be -- that's just plain amazing! It's people like these who give me hope in humankind and the world in general. And, by helping these animals, we ARE helping people. We help people complete their families, and what's happier than that?? :)

    Hi, I'm Barbara aka Shadow's, Soleil's, and Shayna's Mom.

In case you are interested, today there was a great article in our local newspaper all about Rhonda and another lady, Audra Omer, and the freedom train.  You can read it at www.greenvillenews.com and put "Rhonda Sims" in the search box.  (Putting freedom train in the search box gets you news about train wrecks.  Go figure.)

I just joined this forum, and I am happy to see that there's lots more positive energy here than negative.  Everyone has to choose their passions and causes, and sometimes the cause chooses you.

Anyone know of a kennel for rent in the Northern NJ area?

Looks like Room for One More's building is being sold so were looking for a place to continue rescueing our Freedom Train dogs.
